The weekend began Friday evening with solemn Evening Prayer, followed by dinner and conversation in the friars’ rec. room.
Saturday morning, Fr. David Convertinio, OFM, gave our guests an opening reflection on discernment and invited the guys to share their spiritual journeys.
After Fr. David’s talk, Br. John Magaznini, OFM, Br. Richard McFeely, OFM, and Fr. Gene Pistacchio, OFM, shared their own personal experiences of vocation discernment and talked about their ministries.
Lay ministers Dr. Jackie Stewart and Mr. Charley Monaghan discussed their important roles as lay ministry partners at the Shrine. Dr. Jackie is director of evangelization, and Charley Monaghan is involved in the Pieta Ministry, which supports parents who have lost a child.
After lunch, our guests had the opportunity to experience ministry first-hand by working for an hour in the Shrine’s food pantry. Since Saturday is a busy day at the pantry, they were able to witness the great number of people who come in search of food assistance. The afternoon was free for relaxation or exploring Boston.
I am always deeply touched by the sincere desire of our “Come and See” guests to discern God’s call in their lives. Men from very different backgrounds come together to take a deeper look at that call and share their personal journeys with one another. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet the friars, pray together, share meals together and also enjoy the sights of Boston!
